The client is a leading manufacturer in the consumer goods industry, embarked on an expansion initiative at their South African site to meet the increasing market demand. To facilitate this expansion, the client decided to outsource project management, concept design, detailed design, procurement, installation, and commissioning of various equipment items.
The primary objective of the project was to expand the client’s South African site to accommodate higher production volumes. The project management phase focused on drafting execution plans, managing scopes, setting interfaces, managing integration of interfaces, and ensuring coordination among stakeholders. The civil engineering phase aimed to analyze site requirements, develop optimal design layouts, and progress through conceptual and detailed design stages for packaging facilities.
- Initiation of Expansion Project:
- The project management team commenced by drafting a comprehensive execution plan.
- The plan outlined project scopes, defined battery limits, and established interfaces among various work packages.
- Scope Management:
- Meticulous management of scope ensured alignment with overall project objectives and stakeholder expectations.
- Continuous coordination among stakeholders facilitated seamless integration of all project components.
- Budget and Schedule Development:
- Development of an overarching budget and schedule to guide project execution.
- Budget and schedule served as vital tools in managing resources and timelines effectively.
- Stakeholder Coordination:
- Continuous coordination among stakeholders ensured alignment and collaboration throughout the phase.
- Stakeholder engagement facilitated timely decision-making and problem resolution.
The process engineering team were further involved in the development and implementation of the plant Capacity Model. The were to model consider the various products produced on site, past sales data, sales projection, production period and process considerations. The model was thus developed as a tool to for the plant to analyze the plant’s production versus supply and demand, identification of bottlenecks, recipe integration, raw material handling and more.
Civil Engineering Phase – Packaging Civils Requirement:
The civil engineering team commenced by analyzing the South African site to determine optimal design and spatial parameters for packaging facilities. This involved collaborating with other disciplines to gather input for site layout studies. Through iterative processes, the team developed conceptual designs that met project requirements and aligned with the clients operational needs. Subsequently, the team progressed to the detailed design phase, where they meticulously specified requirements and produced drawings necessary for issuing tender packages.
By outsourcing project management and civil engineering tasks, the client successfully navigated the initial phases of their site expansion project. The project management team ensured effective coordination and alignment of scopes, budgets, and schedules, laying a solid foundation for subsequent project stages. Simultaneously, the civil engineering team meticulously analyzed site requirements and developed design solutions that met the company’s operational needs while optimizing spatial utilization.
