Upfield tasked Blue Projects with installing a containerized ammonia system to optimize the refrigeration process at its spread plant. The new system was designed to be skid-mounted and “plug and play,” ensuring ease of installation and integration with existing infrastructure. The system included two screw compressors, each capable of supplying 55 refrigeration tons (RT), meeting the demands of Upfield’s production requirements.
Project Objectives
- Enhance Efficiency: Improve the overall efficiency of the refrigeration process to minimize energy consumption and operating costs.
- Ensure Reliability: Enhance system reliability and uptime to maintain continuous production without disruptions.
- Ensure Environmental Sustainability: Implement an environmentally friendly refrigeration solution in line with Upfield’s commitment to sustainability.
- Support Production Requirements: Meet the refrigeration demands of Upfield’s spread plant, including the operation of multiple MPU units and a chilled water tank for the pasteurization process.

Project Implementation
- Design Phase: Blue Projects collaborated closely with Upfield to understand their requirements and design a tailored solution.
- Engineering and Fabrication: The containerized system was fabricated off-site, allowing for rigorous testing and quality assurance before delivery.
- Installation and Commissioning: The system was transported to Upfield’s spread plant and installed with minimal disruption to ongoing operations. Blue Projects conducted thorough commissioning to ensure optimal performance and safety.
- Training and Support: Blue Projects provided training to Upfield’s maintenance personnel to ensure they could operate and maintain the system effectively. Ongoing support and maintenance services were also offered to uphold system performance over time.
